Overview
The committed Christian Staff of Belgrave Heights Christian School, endeavor to teach all subjects from a Christian context and present Biblical principles in all academic areas. We realise that learning is not confined to the classroom, but that field work, practical tasks, excursions and community involvement also contribute.

Academic Curriculum

The school's curriculum covers subject matter and skills appropriate for each age level. The curriculum is in line with current VELS Guidelines and the National Curriculum Framework. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboard technology to enhance the learning experience. All teachers are encouraged to keep their skills current in their subject areas through regular professional development.

Curriculum Emphases
Basic numeracy, literacy and oracy are the foundation stones for all academic learning. Belgrave Heights staff have these core areas as a priority in their teaching with timetabled literacy and numeracy blocks a feature of the Primary years timetabling arrangements. There is a consistent phonics based approach to reading and writing. Individualised help is given if students are having difficulty with mainstream curriculum through our Special Education Co-ordinator and integration aide assistance. Extension classes are also held, providing lateral development of the skills in the school's more capable students. Selected students from Years 3 to VCE participate each year in the various Westpac and University of New South Wales subject competitions.

Cultural Curriculum
As well as being committed to high academic standards, we recognise the importance of other areas of the curriculum. Drama and Literature form an integral part of our English curriculum. The Primary LOTE program integrates language acquisition with gestures, songs, dances and dramatic presentations. Specialist staff ensure that the children receive expert tuition in:

  • Art/craft: students are given the opportunity to explore various forms of art and craft using a variety of mediums.
  • L.O.T.E. - French: students develop basic vocabulary, oral fluency and an appreciation of French culture.
  • Music: this is a feature and strength of our school wide program. Students receive class Music lessons and are encouraged to participate in weekly instrumental and choral groups. They have opportunities for individual tuition in strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. A music/drama production is performed each year.
  • Physical Education: All students are involved in a structured Physical Education (P.E.) program. This commences with a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) for our Prep Class and progresses to P.E. lessons and organised sport for other year levels.  Selected students may be chosen to represent the school in interschool sporting competitions as part of the Christian Schools’ Sports Network. This includes swimming at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, athletics at Olympic Park and various other local venues.
  • Library: daily use is made of the "Isabel Bell Library" for lessons, borrowing and computer use.

Recreational and Life Skills
The school participates in inter-school sports against metropolitan and local Christian schools. Primary age children are involved in small-group club activities led by staff and parents. Some examples of clubs are Drama, Floristry, Chess, Cross-stitch, Orienteering and Stamps. Parents are encouraged and supported in leading a small group in order to enrich the students' development in a particular area. All students are involved in a Camps programme of some kind. Even Preps begin with a “stay late” evening at the school. An example of a specialised camp in Secondary is that of the Year 9 Marine Camp to Torquay where they learn about local marine life as well as receiving instruction in scuba and surfing. Secondary LOTE students have also gone to New Caledonia for an optional language immersion experience.
